Message About External Funding Applications

In light of the College's institutional eligibility for Tri-Council research grants, some faculty may wish to apply for NSERC or SSHRC funding. At present, the College has no formal policy guiding grant application processes, so the purpose of this message is to provide some direction to anyone planning to submit a grant proposal to NSERC or SSHRC in 2010-2011 academic year.

NSERC and SSHRC require grant applicants to demonstrate that their institution is willing to administer the grant and provide any in kind support such as research space or technical assistance. In response to this requirement, College employees who plan to apply for Canadian Tri-Council funding are asked to provide their Dean/Director with a copy of their grant application, including a detailed budget, at least 14 days prior to the application deadline. The Dean/Director will review all grant applications and forward them to the Vice President, Education. The Vice President's role is to review the grant application and provide institutional approval to satisfy NSERC/SSHRC that the College will provide administrative support to service the grant, and meet any commitments for in kind support. After approval has been provided, applicants can submit their report directly to NSERC or SSHRC.

Details about NSERC and SSHRC grants, including application deadlines, are posted on the NSERC and SSHRC websites. Please note that many NSERC and SSHRC grant applications require a letter of intent several weeks prior to the grant application deadline.

A formal College policy will be developed later this year. The effectiveness of the process outlined above will help inform that policy.
