We can't recommend a precise amount of pocket money to bring, but keep in mind that British Columbia is known to have one of the higher costs of living in Canada. Therefore, we suggest that you consider
pocket money ($100 to $150 for each week of the program) to cover expenses which may include
souvenirs, clothing, other goods purchased
dinner outside of your homestay
phone calls
costs of local optional activities you choose to participate in
activities you choose to do on your own time
approximately $175 to $200 for transportation (talk to us on arrival day about which passes or tickets to buy)
costs of overnight optional trips (Tofino/Victoria and Whistler)
Be ready for anything.
You will have the opportunity to participate in many outdoor activities. This region of British Columbia is known for its summer rain. Bring a raincoat, an umbrella, sunscreen, and sunglasses. You may need all four in the same hour. Most students wear casual clothing but may dress up for our pledge celebration, which is held at a local restaurant. Also, many nightclubs will have dress codes which may require non-casual shoes and clothing.
If you want to use the gym or participate in a sports and recreation workshop, you will need "gym strip" (shoes that don't mark the floor and appropriate clothing). It's a good idea to bring a bathing suit since there are many beaches in the area.
If possible, please bring a map, photos, or postcards of the region where you live. These materials are often used in discussions with international students.
If you play an instrument, bring it with you to participate in our amateur talent night.
Bring your provincial health insurance card. In case of sickness or an accident, you will have to pay the medical costs and will be reimbursed upon your return home. Your card is only accepted in certain clinics and by certain doctors. You are responsible for expenses related to pre-existing medical conditions. You should make sure that you have insurance coverage before participating in the Explore program.
Bring at least two pieces of identification. At least one official piece of identification should have your picture on it. If you want to go to a bar or drink alcohol, British Columbia law requires you to have two pieces of identification.
Bring an English-only dictionary. Bilingual/translation (e.g. English-to-French, French-to-English) dictionaries will not be permitted in class.
Please bring a basic USB flash drive of any capacity. Laptop owners are welcome to bring their laptops and use the wireless internet at the College, but we do not have secure storage for laptops, so students will have to carry them at all times.
